My New Year’s Resolution is to improve my health. I’ve gotten lax about diet and exercise since I started working at Disney in August. As a new member of the 40 hour/week workforce, I’ve entered a critical period where I’m defining the habits that I’ll likely maintain for the rest of my life. I’m not pleased with the ones I’ve developed thus far. It’s time for change.
Using some of the concepts I’ve picked up from reading Tim Ferriss’ new book, The 4-Hour Body, as well as experience built through ten years of weight lifting, five years of competitive rowing, and my time (albeit brief) working as a personal trainer, I intend to remake myself; I’ve done it before, and I’ll do it again.
Like Tim, my focus will be on highly efficient use of time. One of my obstacles to balancing work and health is a (perceived) lack of time and/or motivation to exercise after a long, mentally-taxing day of work. To overcome this, I’ll be lowering the barriers to entry for exercise (i.e. changing clothes, driving to the gym), and reducing the amount of time spent working out.
Specifically, for the next month, I will exercise only five minutes per day, six days a week. No more, no less. Workouts will be intense and structured to achieve steady, incremental results. I will not visit the gym, nor use expensive home equipment. Along with this fitness “regimen,” I’ll be maintaining a fairly strict healthy diet, and tracking my nutritional intake to meet my goals.
To help hold myself accountable, I’ll be posting updates on my progress here on my blog. Feel free to leave any questions or comments on my updates.
